Cetina: a lost prehistoric landscape
March 3 2005 by Professor Vincent Gaffney
(Director, The Institute of Archaeology and
Antiquity, University of Birmingham will talk
about this fascinating and mysterious area of
Croatia sharing with his audience some of his
experiences through slides, video and discussion.)
‘Cetina: a lost prehistoric landscape’
The Cetina Valley is one of the most beautiful
landscapes in Croatia. It is also one of the
most mysterious. Over the last 10 years a remarkable
series of archaeological finds including dozens
of prehistoric swords, axes and helmets has
emerged from the river. Inspired by these finds,
the Croatian Museum of Archaeological Monuments,
along with the University of Birmingham, has
begun a programme of exploration in the valley
and now suspect that it contains one of the
best preserved prehistoric landscapes in Europe.
The lecture will present some of the finds and
the dramatic aerial photographs of the region
currently being taken as part of the research
project. There will also be a video that features
divers pulling swords out of riverbanks!
