  • 26 November 2004 British-Croatian Society Annual Dinner:
    • The Society’s dinner was held in the spectacular Grand Hall of the Battersea Arts Centre on Friday 26 November in the presence of the Croatian Ambassador, HE Mr Josko Paro and Mrs Paro and Patrons of the Society. The principal speaker was The Rt. Hon The Lord Taylor of Blackburn.
    • The event was a great success with nearly 200 guests enjoying a feast of Croatian gastronomy and wine. The menu included truffles from Istria and other Croatian delicacies. Leading Croatian producers provided the wines for which the Society is most grateful
    • Guests were further entertained by a fashion show, models included Miss Croatia and Miss Tourism courtesy of UMAH-Fashion doo of Zagreb represented by Regina Jeger, Managing Director.
    • The world-renowned Croatian-artist Zvonimir Mihanovic presented one of his works, which was auctioned, members bidding generously. The Chief Executive of Camelot PL Mr. Philip Clover’s bid of £1,200 meant that he took home a splendid piece of Croatian art. Members also gave £635 pounds towards the raffle prizes of which included holidays in Croatia. The lucky winners were:
    • Michele Lyons won 7 days for 2 people sharing a luxury apartment in Umag kindly donated by Simbioza Travel (Simbioza Travel specialise in Croatian holidays, contact www.travel2croatia.co.uk and www.croatian-villas.com);

    • Thanks to the hard work of all concerned and the support of our members and generosity of our sponsors the evening was a great success.
    • Members and their guests heard speeches from Dr David Davison, Chairman British-Croatian Society and the Rt Hon Lord Taylor of Blackburn. David spoke of the Society’s rebirth with increased membership and an energetic and hardworking committee, which he was proud to lead. He urged those present to renew their membership with immediate effect all membership will run from 1 January 2005.
    • 7 October 2004: BCS Committee Members call on Rt. Hon. Michael Mackintosh Foot.
    • On 23 July 2004, The Rt. Hon. Michael Foot celebrated his 91st birthday and as a BCS Patron the Society wanted to wish him happy birthday and good health. Unfortunately, Michael’s busy programme meant he was absent from London for several weeks.
    • On 7 October Gordon Kirby and Paul Jenc, on behalf of the Society, called on Michael at his Hampstead home. Michael was in great form and entertained his visitors for over 90 minutes during which they enjoyed a splendid afternoon tea.
    • To commemorate Michael’s birthday (rather belatedly) Paul presented him with a pair of bottles of excellent Croatian red wine from the Kozlovic Istrian vineyards (kindly provided by Mr Kozlovic who supplied the wine for the Society’s dinner on 26 November.)
    • Michael in accepting the gift wished the Society the very best of luck in its future efforts.
  • 4-9 May 2004 Visit of the Vokalni Ansambl Lisinski to the UK
    • Under the sponsorship of the British-Croatian Society, the world-renowned Zagreb-based choir visited the UK. Their programme included performances as follows:
    • - Oxford: May 5 (Hollywell Music Room);
    • - London: May 6 (St Margaret’s Lothbury);
    • - Cambridge: 7 May (St John’s College Chapel);
    • Under the direction of Heda Gospodnetic the choir of twenty-five presented a programme of Renaissance choral music with some additional Croatian music. The performances were given in Renaissance costume.
    • Oxford provided the base for the choir for the first two days. The choir then moved to Victoria and made a day-trip to Cambridge for the concert there.
    • The performances were all well attended; St Margaret’s Lothbury in the City of London in particular was packed and numbered the Croatian Ambassador, Mr Josko Paro and Mrs Paro among the audience.
    • Receptions were held after the London and Cambridge performances and the impromptu singing went on late in to the evening on both occasions. It was indeed a joy to hear well known Croatian melodies echoing round the courts of St John’s as the Cambridge evening drew to a close.
    • 10 February 2005: His Excellency Mr Josko Paro and Mrs Paro kindly hosted a cocktail reception at the Residence exclusively for Society Members. It was an enjoyable evening with over 60 present enjoying excellent Croatian wine and food.
